Community Engagement

We are committed to community engagement: working with and supporting local organisations and participating in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) related activity, helping young people in the UK to receive a world-leading STEM education which in turn offers exciting and rewarding career options.

In addition, our site locations in Glasgow and Blyth have organised and supported several fund-raising events, the proceeds of which have been donated to local and national charities.

Here’s some of the ways we’ve supported the community in the past 12 months:

STEM Initatives

ORE Catapult continues to support the UK’s STEM agenda and we now have formal programmes of work that support skills development across our sites in Glasgow, Levenmouth and Blyth.

Glasgow STEM Club

A grant of £5,211 from the Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious Awards has allowed the Catapult to purchase a series of educational kits to deliver “STEM by stealth” lesson plans. This allows the Catapult to engage children in learning by doing in collaboration with the STEM Ambassador Network and local primary schools. The kits include model wind turbines, photovoltaic panels, solar power water heaters, hydrogen fuel cells, flood disaster relief challenges and other materials – these facilitate fun, educational activities that promote STEM subjects and the importance of renewable energy, sustainability and taking care of the environment.

The 4 schools that the Catapult is in discussions with are in areas of high deprivation and have little to no engagement with STEM Learning.

The Catapult has also engaged with several other charities and organisations to work towards a coherent goal rather than working in isolation. These include: Young Engineers and Science Clubs (YESC) as part of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI); Primary Engineer, Glasgow Science Festival, Lighting Up the Curriculum for Excellence, Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Scotland and the Energy Skills Partnership.

Blyth STEM Hub

Blyth STEM Hub has been established to deliver STEM activities and support to local schools and business​ in​ Blyth and surrounding areas. To date, the Blyth STEM Hub has had huge success in establishing itself at the centre of the local STEM network and is growing in support. Notable achievements to date include:

  • 350 young people engaged in ​STEM sessions
  • 120 teachers engaged, including CPD sessions
  • 12 local schools working directly with the STEM hub, including a STEM teacher advisory group with representatives from each school
  • 45 Employers/stakeholders engaged with the hub​.

Enterprise Advisor (EA) initiative

The EA initiative is a scheme run by the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), linking schools with local industry. The Catapult is partnered with Northumberland Church of England Academy (NCEA), Ashington. We have worked to link their core subject areas with relevant local businesses, exposing their students to the world of work and career opportunities. To date, the Catapult has delivered business links for students in subject areas including mathematics, modern languages, construction, geography and science.



As the owner/operators of the Levenmouth 7MW demonstration turbine, located at the Fife Energy Park in Scotland, we work closely with Fife Council and local educational bodies on the development of world-leading skills and training programmes in renewable technologies that will support the development of Levenmouth as a global centre of excellence in offshore wind. We also sponsor a STEM Engagement officer based at Levenmouth Academy.
