Introduction

The Disruptive Innovation team aims to enable high-growth-potential SMEs to enter the offshore wind sector and to discover and support future technologies (robotics, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems etc.) with the potential to benefit offshore wind.

Our team uses technology foresighting to identify innovations that will support offshore wind.  We are particularly interested in how we can apply successful technology from other sectors to our own.

 

Activity

The Research & Disruptive Innovation team at ORE Catapult takes a long-term, independent view of technology development. We take a strategic approach to SME support – helping to identify specific challenges, carrying out technology assessment, identifying funding, testing and commercialisation support.  We also provide a strong interface to the needs of industry for academia to ensure that research is focused and productive.

 

This project will prove that the reliability and availability of tidal energy arrays can be increased significantly and that we can reduce the cost of tidal energy by at least 40%

Projects

In 2016/17, ORE Catapult worked with over 150 SMEs from a broad range of sectors.  We have recently been working with a novel textile blade developer, an autonomous underwater inspection company and many developers of instrumentation and sensor technology.

Whilst many of the innovations that we are working on will have immediate cost reduction impact, we are also looking at the wind farm of the future; concepts for larger, increasingly efficient wind farms to be built in 2030 and beyond.
