The Analysis & Insights team provides three core services:

  • economic analysis to provide a wider context for ORE Catapult activities;
  • industry-wide thought leadership through the production of Analysis & Insight papers
  • financial modelling services.

Our industry-level analysis aims to explain – and where possible, quantify – the impact of actual and potential developments in all aspects of offshore renewables, from policy through to technology innovation and the supply chain.

Our detailed financial modelling supports wider Catapult projects, assessing the cost reduction potential of different innovations.


Our activity

We provide independent, evidence- and experience-based analysis of opportunities for new and existing supply chain companies.

We can also translate detailed technical concepts into value through seeking to understand how new concepts compare with the current state of the art solutions.

We maintain a number of standard financial models, but our modelling is tailored towards project-specific needs, being able to focus on the most important aspects, which may be a detailed cost build-up for a specific area (e.g. array cable supply, foundation installation, etc.), financing arrangements (e.g. debt/equity mix, loan term, interest rates, etc.), future cost reductions (e.g. incorporating specific innovations, applying learning rates to deployment profiles), economic benefit (e.g. applying economic multipliers to appropriate elements of supply chain expenditure) or any other.


Our projects

The Analysis & Insights team is currently involved in a number of projects, including:

  • financial analysis for two floating wind projects;
  • financial analysis of a novel tidal turbine foundation;
  • financial analysis of a novel wind turbine generator;
  • financial analysis of a novel foundation corrosion protection solution;
  • a feasibility study for using offshore wind substations to export power from offshore gas platforms;
  • leading the offshore work package of Task 26, and contributing to Task 37, of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Wind Programme.


Key successes

The team has produced four Analysis & Insights papers, with topics including cost reduction and economic benefit in UK offshore wind and financial appraisal of marine energy electrical array.

They have contributed significantly to the design, implementation and delivery of the Cost Reduction Monitoring Framework and have also produced or contributed to deliverables in a number of commercially confidential Catapult projects, including several in floating offshore wind, fixed-bottom offshore wind, wave energy and tidal energy.
