Linking Wind Farm Control To Market Conditions In Real Time To Maximise Value

During the operational phase of wind farms, outside of regular payments from subsidy schemes or long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), a portion of the generated electricity will be sold to the market and therefore be exposed to price volatility risk. Increasingly, for the UK offshore wind sector, “merchant pricing” may in the years to come replace the conventional forms of subsidy as the main form of revenue. Whilst developers (and their lenders and financial backers on a particular project) will seek to protect against downside risk, there is also an upside opportunity to generate greater value from operating the wind farm more aggressively during time of peak power demand and reduce the capacity factor at times of lower price. RRPL is seeking a solution that will exploit this upside opportunity but balance it against a reduction in the long-term life of the asset.

Wind Measurement Beyond The Wind Turbine

Red Rock Power Ltd is seeking a solution that will enable the alignment of the methods and procedures for power performance testing/ turbulence definition from remote sensing technologies and the design standards used in the definition of a power curve. This solution may be based on current available technology with a new  proven approach or based upon a new technological solution.

Eliminating Technician Risk In Wind Farm Heavy Lifts

As a sector, offshore wind has some relatively unique challenges for the installation of wind turbine generator (WTG) parts. Historically, WTG OEMs have typically used human technicians at critical parts of the mechanical assembly process that can often require human intervention to perform the release, final alignment and bolt torqueing etc. Red Rock Power Ltd is keen to develop new and novel techniques itself to take a more leading stance on helping the industry remove this hazard once and for all from the offshore wind sector and has the ability to offer the successful company potential for testing of prototypes on its onshore and/or offshore wind projects.

Open Category

The open category is for UK companies (or companies looking to set up in the UK) developing an innovative product or service that could either reduce costs, reduce risk or increase the efficiency of offshore wind farms. If your innovation does not fit any of the specific Launch Academy challenges, then this is the category for you. We are looking for the next game-changing innovation to help our industry reach a target of 30GW in UK waters by 2030 and 75GW by 2050. With current installed capacity at 8.3GW, the industry has a pipeline offering significant growth for any prospective new product or service planning to launch.
