A view from inside the Immersive Hybrid Reality Offshore Wind Turbine

The Immersive Hybrid Reality Offshore Wind Turbine is a novel mixed-reality system that enables users to perform actual tasks while being immersed within virtual but realistic site conditions. The technology uniquely integrates state-of-the-art, real-time localisation technologies and a wearable immersive display (VR/AR goggles). The iHR system uses a direct animation of ORE Catapult’s 7MW Demonstration Turbine, located in Fife, Scotland, and has been designed to give users the following experience:

• Replicating the working conditions of being over 110m up on top of an offshore wind turbine nacelle
• An exciting and interactive element to training and learning in safe college conditions
• Realistic training scenarios whereby the user must recognise faults and issues and carry out the corrective action
• The sensation of working at heights, changeable weather conditions and realistic sounds.

The Immersive Hybrid Reality Offshore Wind Turbine is on public display as part of the Great Exhibition of the North. It can be found at The Core at Newcastle Helix from 19th July – 9th September 2018.
