NEXT GENERATION TURBINES

It is a simple fact that next generation turbines are getting bigger, and at ORE Catapult, we have been at the forefront of supporting the development of the industry’s largest and most advanced technologies, including the world’s largest wind turbine and longest blade.

Achieving the UK’s ambitious targets to increase offshore wind capacity to 40GW and enable the sector to support 60,000 new jobs by 2030 is contingent on major developments in turbine technology.

Our open-access testing facilities at our National Renewable Energy Centre in Blyth – the largest of their kind in the world – plays a crucial role in gaining early investor confidence, in turn unlocking billions of pounds in low carbon infrastructure investment, supporting the UK’s green economic recovery and helping the UK along its path to Net Zero.

We combine the world’s largest and most technically capable open-access test facilities in offshore wind and marine technology testing (blades, powertrains and electrical infrastructure), with industry leading engineering knowledge and research expertise.

OUR PRODUCTS & SERVICES FOR NEXT GENERATION TURBINES

We have a unique combination of world-leading test and demonstration facilities paired with engineering and research expertise. It means we can convene the sector to deliver applied research, accelerate technology development, reduce risk, reduce cost, and enhance UK-wide economic growth.

We are capable of delivering multi-million-pound testing and research projects with equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and we also spearhead sectorleading programmes of research, such as those in the fields of robotics, autonomous systems, digitalization and artificial intelligence.

Our services include:

Blades

Our blade specialists, alongside cutting-edge test and research facilities, enable clients to not only certify blades to industry standards, but also understand and enhance their blade design, materials, manufacture and overall performance.

Powertrains

Our experienced powertrain specialists, engineering and project management teams work with clients to enhance and validate their advanced and complex wind and tidal turbine powertrain systems.

Electrical Infrastructure

We test, validate and demonstrate high-voltage electrical components, cables (static or dynamic) and materials in our UKAS-accredited laboratories.

Cables

A bespoke, state-of-the-art cable bend fatigue test rig supporting the development – and improving the performance and reliability of – subsea cables. The rig is capable of testing floating wind and tidal cables, carrying out operational research, and acting as a representative test bed for all aspects of subsea cable development.

Structures

We provide a range of testing, validation and research services for entire structures and foundations, with access to major assets deployed offshore, as well as components associated with the base of turbines. With our facilities, we are able to prove the reliability and performance of critical structures and foundations supporting turbine advancements.
