Kinewell

Published 24 September 2025

Kinewell is a company with innovation at its core, developing software solutions with the use of AI and advanced mathematics, to accelerate and reduce the cost of offshore wind.

With a significant skills gap to deliver net zero at pace, Kinewell value collaboration over competition, and sharing their technology to maximise its reach and impact. Their software tools deliver increased productivity through digitalisation and automation.

Working with ORE Catapult

Kinewell credits the Technology, Innovation and Green Growth for Offshore Renewables (TIGGOR) programme delivered by ORE Catapult as pivotal in enabling the product development that led to export sales, and a 2025 King’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade.

New products launched

Being awarded their first tranche of TIGGOR funding was the catalyst for Kinewell to deliver industry ready solutions and springboard into a fully Software as a Service (SaaS) business and supported breakthrough developments within their industry-leading Kinewell Layout Optimisation of Cable (KLOC) software. KLOC rapidly designs optimised inter-array cable layouts for offshore wind farms.

Since then, with further tranches of TIGGOR support, they have launched a substation location heatmap module, dynamic cable layout capabilities for floating wind, and implemented integration of redundancy into cable designs to minimise downtime.

Most notably, Kinewell has developed KLOWD, a game-changing holistic design tool, that unlocks new opportunities to reduce costs, de-risk projects, and accelerate delivery timelines by optimising turbine placement, inter-array cable layout design, and export system selection.

Job growth

Kinewell now has a team of 12 employees, reflecting the growth supported by the TIGGOR programme. These highly skilled roles are focused on advancing their core technologies, and they have introduced marketing, business development, and operational support to drive long-term success. Kinewell also hosted more than 10 paid student intern opportunities through local universities, to provide hands-on industry experience.

In 2024, they launched EduKLOC, a free educational game, sponsored by RS Group, that’s transforming how students explore offshore wind technology and real-world engineering challenges.

The free tool, based on our commercial KLOC software is a gateway to real-world engineering challenges.

Investment raised

Following TIGGOR-1, Kinewell secured further tranches of funding through both the TIGGOR 2 and TIGGOR 2.5 programmes, as well as attracting investment from InnovateUK, North East BIC, and others, to develop cutting-edge technologies, create high-value jobs, and strengthen the local innovation ecosystem.

Contracts secured

Kinewell has significantly expanded their geographical footprint, opening doors to new export markets, spreading North East innovation worldwide. Their software is trusted by industry giants such as Equinor, Parkwind, Xodus, SSE Renewables, Berwick Bank Windfarm, PSC, and SouthCoast Wind amongst others.

Revenue growth

The TIGGOR programmes have contributed to a strong compound annual growth rate of their revenues of 68% from 2021 to 2025. Kinewell was awarded the 2025 King’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade, recognising their global growth.

Testimonial

“The TIGGOR programme has been a fantastic platform for innovation, supporting companies like ours as we develop the next generation of offshore wind technologies. This support is vital as the industry navigates the complex challenges of floating wind and cost uncertainties.

“Our TIGGOR project is enabling us to deliver cutting-edge, new-to-market solutions that lower the cost of both fixed-bottom and floating offshore wind projects. By bringing these new capabilities to market, we can help projects around the world move forward to construction, while creating sustainable green jobs here at home and strengthening the North East of England’s position as a world-leading hub for offshore wind innovation.”
