Fennex Ltd, founded in 2016 in Aberdeen, is an award-winning technology company on a mission to accelerate the automation and digital transformation of health and safety management within the UK’s energy sector.
In May 2025, the company was awarded the King’s Award for Enterprise 2025 – recognised for its excellence in international trade, having achieved outstanding short-term growth in overseas sales over the three preceding years.
With the company’s senior team bringing a 25-year wealth of expertise servicing the oil and gas sector internationally, the Fennex team turned their collective focus to harnessing cloud computing techniques – blending artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques – to digitally overhaul health and safety management, facilitate more effective collaboration and elevate compliance and reporting within the wider energy sector.
Having identified offshore renewable energy as a key business development target, Fennex Ltd’s Director of Strategy, Nassima Brown, approached our colleagues at the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership (OWGP) in early 2024 to access detailed offshore wind insights and discuss potential funding support.
WindsafeTM – Real-time response and risk mitigation
Fennex’s WindSafe™ solution builds on the company’s BBSS TM (Behaviour Based Safety Solution) digital platform, already operational in 75 international offshore oil and gas installations. BBSS TM users have recorded KPIs (key performance indictors) reflecting a 43% decrease in recordable incidents and a 30% boost in safety reporting.
The company’s WindsafeTM platform, developed exclusively for the offshore wind sector, is similarly based on a single collaborative digital platform which allows both developers and contractors access to real-time safety information through live data processing and streaming, allowing for immediate monitoring and swift, targeted risk mitigation. User-friendly dashboards provide real-time situation reporting across multiple projects.
A predictive insights function provides enhanced visibility, flagging potential hazards serving to minimise incidents, and automated functionality for proactive, timely, and accurate tracking of corrective actions.

A full suite of support
Nassima Brown’s initial approach led the OWGP team to award Innovation Grant funding which facilitated extensive stakeholder engagement geared to evaluate how WindSafe™ could be adopted by offshore wind developers. Input was secured from Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG), Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC), Shell, Vattenfall, ScottishPower Renewables and Offshore Energies UK (OEUK). These sessions revealed the offshore wind sector’s core concerns around safety as well as their desire for access to real-time safety-monitoring and risk management tools.
Further support for WindSafeTM development followed, courtesy of OWGP’s WEST business transformation support after which Fennex Ltd secured its first pilot customer, the BlueFloat Energy | Nadara Partnership, and trialled WindSafe™ across four projects with potential for expansion into projects in Italy.

F4OR and Launch Academy deliver wraparound support
In April 2024, the Fennex team took part in ORE Catapult’s Fit for Offshore Renewables (F4OR) North East Scotland programme, delivered in partnership with ETZ Ltd (Energy Transition Zone). F4OR is one of the UK’s most successful supply chain mentoring programmes providing tailored business support for companies targeting success in the growing offshore renewables energy sector.
At the end of November 2024, Fennex were selected for Launch Academy Scotland – ORE Catapult’s first Launch Academy supply chain support programme exclusively designed and delivered for Scotland-based small to medium enterprises (SMEs). Launch Academy is an industry-focused technology development and business mentoring programme that provides wraparound support designed to accelerate commercialisation of products and services targeting the UK and global offshore wind market.
With WindSafe™ now commercially available – and having taken part in the 2024 UK Offshore Wind Supply Chain Spotlight Conference and Exhibition – the Fennex team has set its sights on securing further installations of WindSafeTM in the UK and international offshore wind sector.
Transformational support
Commenting on the impact of working with OWGP and ORE Catapult, Nassima Brown, Strategic Director commented: “OWGP’s innovation funding and ORE Catapult’s sector-focused business support have been catalysts for Fennex’s growth and transition into offshore wind, empowering us to bring decades of offshore oil & gas expertise to accelerate digital transformation in renewables. Their support has enabled us to develop AI-powered solutions that drive efficiency, collaboration, and cost reduction – delivering real impact where it matters most.
“With their backing, we are not just adapting to change; we are driving it—pioneering AI-driven technology to revolutionise offshore wind operations and push the industry toward a smarter, more sustainable future.”
